The CVI Assessment Range by Dr Christine Roman-Lantzy is a well-known tool used amongst CVI professionals and parents. I devoured her book, ‘Cortical Visual Impairment: An Approach to Assessment and Intervention’ (https://tinyurl.com/y75ukm94) when I first came across it a few months after Eva’s diagnosis. Dr Roman-Lantzy has created a framework to help parents/professionals perform accurate assessments of a child’s functional vision, called the CVI Range.

Dr. Roman-Lantzy defines salient features as, “the defining elements that distinguish one target from another.” (Roman-Lantzy, p204). Dr. Christine Roman-Lantzy’s CVI Range: Evaluates your child’s functional vision in relation to 10 visual and behavioral characteristics: color preference, visual latency, need for movement, difficulty with novelty, visual field preferences, complexity (array, objects, faces, sensory environment), difficulty with distance viewing, need for light, atypical visual reflexes, and difficulty with visually guided reach. Roman-Lantzy's CVI Range uses a scale of 0-10 to score and measure Christine Roman-Lantzy, PhD, is Director of the Pediatric VIEW (Vision Information and Evaluation at West Penn Hospital) Program at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, and a private consultant for Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Resources. Christine Roman-Lantzy, PhD, defines 10 characteristics of visual behavior that are quantifiable using the CVI Range ©, which are outlined in her textbook Cortical Visual Impairment: An Approach to Assessment and Intervention (2007, 2018). The characteristics are visual processing functions that occur in cortices of the temporal, parietal, and probably the frontal lobe of the brain. On the basis of more than 30 years’ experience in working with hundreds of children of all ages with CVI, Christine Roman-Lantzy has developed a set of unique assessment tools and systematic, targeted principles whose use has helped children learn to use their vision more effectively.
